Visindar gets last prep before Epsom

Visindar, the 3-1 favorite at Ladbrokes for the Epsom Derby, gets his acid test at Saint-Cloud on Monday in the Group 2, $167,000 Prix Greffulhe.

Visindar, a son of 2000 Epsom Derby winner Sinndar who is owned by the Aga Khan and trained by Andre Fabre, has easily won a one-mile Saint-Cloud maiden and a 1 1/8-mile Longchamp allowance in his only two starts. In the 1 1/4-mile Greffulhe he will face five rivals, one of whom, Moon Mix, will serve as his pacesetter.

It would be a major disappointment if Visindar, who will be ridden by Christophe Soumillon, fails to live up to expectations. Bremen, just a short head second to Gentlewave in the Group 2 Prix Noailles on April 17, is his most accomplished foe, but there may be more to fear from Onerous, an undefeated Groom Dancer colt who has won two races in the provinces.

Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, the man who leads Fabre in the French trainer standings in both wins (71-40) and earnings (1.2 million euros to 1.1 million euros), Onerous has won a 1 5/16-mile maiden at Angers and a 1 3/8-mile allowance at Toulouse. With Ioritz Mendizabal aboard, he should give Visindar a run for his money.

Fabre has been careful to point out that Visindar must be successful in the Greffulhe if he is to travel to Epsom for the June 3 Derby, one of the world's few major races to have eluded the 19-time French champion trainer.
