Vinnie Roe in bid for record

Vinnie Roe goes for an unprecedented fourth consecutive triumph in the Irish St. Leger at The Curragh on Saturday.

The 6-year-old Vinnie Roe is as honest as the day is long and is perfectly suited to the conditions of the 1 3/4-mile Group 1 race, worth $343,000. Trainer Dermot Weld has prepped Vinnie Roe with second-place finishes in a pair of listed races and will give Pat Smullen a leg up. Weld will also saddle Media Puzzle, in just his second start off a 21-month absence since winning the Melbourne Cup in November 2002.

Brian Boru is the most dangerous of three Aidan O'Brien entrants. The winner of last year's Doncaster St. Leger, he was an unlucky runner-up in the 1 7/8-mile, Group 2 Prix Kergorlay at Deauville on Aug. 22.

The lightly raced Orange Touch, winner of a Goodwood listed event over the Irish St. Leger distance last time, and First Charter, recent winner of the Group 3 Lonsdale Cup at two miles, are the best of the six British invaders.
