Vinery's New York farm getting Giant Surprise, maiden winner

Email

Saratoga juvenile winner Giant Surprise, retired after his July 30 win with a non-displaced condylar fracture, will enter stud next year at Vinery in New York.

A Giant's Causeway colt owned by Mike Repole, Giant Surprise will stand for $3,500 at Vinery's Sugar Maple division in Poughquag,  N.Y.

In his lone start, Giant Surprise won a six-furlong maiden race by 4 1/4 lengths over Officer Prado, who came back to win his next start. George and Charles Bolton bred Giant Surprise, and Repole bought him for $130,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling auction. Todd Pletcher trained the bay colt, who is the first foal out of the A. P. Indy mare Twisted Sis.

Repole also announced Wednesday that he has bought a minority interest in Bluegrass Cat, the WinStar Farm stallion who has relocated to Sugar Maple in a WinStar/Vinery venture.
