Vicarino cruises at Golden Gate

ALBANY, Calif. – Vicarino ($2.80) put away Double Action early, pulled clear, and was not seriously challenged in the $50,275 Stinson Beach, a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds at Golden Gate Fields on Monday.

Vicarino set fractions of 21.34 and 43.81, racing just in front of Double Action. Double Action dropped from contention andVicarino won the race by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:09.23. Candy's Bro finished second, seven lengths in front of Double Action, with Zoning In last in the field of four, another half-length back.

Jockey Russell Baze said Vicarino refused to relax during the race, which is why he ended up on the lead. The colt was a handful in the paddock and was acting up a bit in the starting gate.

"He'll get a lot out of this race," Baze said. "He got plenty tired. It was a good race, and it will set him up well for the next one."

Trainer Greg Gilchrist said he is looking at the Grade 2 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream on Feb. 3 for Vicarino's next start.

Vicarino, who set a track record at Fresno in his previous start, earned $27,900 for his third victory in four starts and his second stakes win, and boosted his career earnings to $71,525.
