Vespone wires Prix de Paris


Vespone gave no one else a chance at Longchamp on Sunday as he led throughout to take the fabled Grand Prix de Paris.

Supplemented to the $577,000 Group 1 contest for $35,000, Vespone, a 3-year-old son of Llandaff, prevailed by 1 1/2 lengths under Christophe-Patrick Lemaire.

Trained by Nicolas Clement, Vespone was clocked in 2:01.10 for the 1 1/4 miles of the paris, just .10 seconds off the track mark.

Magistretti came from ninth to take second near the line, while Jipapibaquigrafo came home fifth, 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner.

Clement has not yet formalized plans for Vespone, who was sent off as the 1.70-1 choice.

* At San Siro, Godolphin sprung an upset in the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano as the 4-1 Leadership scored a 1 3/4-length tally over the 1-5 Warrsan. Leadership led virtually throughout, getting the 1 1/2 miles on firm ground in 2:28.30.
