Vernon: Stakes action galore for sophomores

Bill's Man, a Hambletonian eligible, is out of 2004 Hambletonian Oaks winner Silver Springs

Three-year-old colt trotters and filly pacers were featured in Empire Breeders Classic eliminations and New York Sire Stakes competition on Friday night at Vernon Downs.

The trotters kicked off the stakes action in race four, with Bill's Man (Corey Callahan) rallying out of the pocket in the stretch to take the first $12,500 Empire Breeders Classic elimination by two lengths in 1:53.  Such An Angel (Mark MacDonald) was up for second, with Stick With Me Kid (Brian Sears), who had led through panels of 27 4/5, 56 4/5, and 1:24 2/5, fading to third.  Top Flight Angel (Marcus Miller) and Another Chapter (Jim Morrill Jr.) rounded out the top five.

Bill's Man, a colt by Credit Winner, is trained by John Butenschoen for owners William Wiswell and M And L Of Delaware LLC.  This was his fourth career victory, and he has now earned $95,241.  The 4-5 favorite, Bill's Man paid $3.90 to win.

Two races later the other Empire Breeders Classic elimination was staged, and Devious Man (Andy Miller) overcame stalled cover on the far turn to get up and win by half a length in 1:53 4/5.  Swell Chap (Callahan) was the runner-up, and Lord Cromwell (John Campbell), who took over the lead from Swell Chap after the 27 4/5 opening quarter before hitting the half in 58 1/5 and the three-quarters in 1:26, wound up third.  DW's Revenge (Sears) brushed from seventh to fourth in the final quarter, and Aces And Eights (Dan Daley) was fifth after his first-over bid.

Julie Miller trains Devious Man, a Credit Winner colt who was the New York Sire Stakes champion for this group last year.  Stroy Inc. and Andy Miller Inc. share ownership of Devious Man, who is now an nine-time winner from 14 lifetime starts and an earner of $334,433.  Devious Man was sent off at even-money and returned $4.10 to win.

As for the New York Sire Stakes events, Clear Idea (MacDonald) kicked off their three divisions with a 1:52 score in the $39,900 opener after she led the field of seven past stations of 27, 56 3/5, and 1:25.  She beat Gurl Band K (Dan Dube) by a length and a quarter, with Artrageous (Andy Miller) back in third.

Angel's Pride (Sears) won the fastest of the three flights, taking the second $40,600 grouping by a length and a quarter in 1:51 after a first-over trip in the back-half of the mile.  Major Master Piece (Morrill Jr.) followed the cover and finished second and St Helena (MacDonald) collected third.

Playing Favorites (Jason Bartlett) completed the stakes winners for the night by grabbing the third $40,600 New York Sire Stakes contest in 1:52 3/5.  She led at the 28 1/5 opening quarter, yielded to Windsun Brooklyn (Pat Lachance) before the 57 second half, and remained in the pocket at the 1:25 three-quarters.  Planet Rock (Campbell) took over the lead from first-over in the stretch, but Playing Favorites was able to re-emerge from the pocket and had pace to go with the space, getting up for a one length decision.  Magic Forces (Marcus Miller) finished in third.

Playing Favorites is a daughter of Roll With Joe trained by Jenny Melander for owners Lewis Whitaker Jr. and Charles Rowe.  Winless in nine rookie tries, Playing Favorites has a trio of tallies from four efforts this season to go with career earnings of $55,387.   Playing Favorites was the 5-1 third choice and paid $13.20 to win.
