Ventura misses Shoemaker

Ventura, the 5-year-old millionaire mare, was withdrawn from Monday's $250,000 Shoemaker Mile on the morning of the race after trainer Bobby Frankel said he was not pleased with her training.

Frankel said that Ventura is not injured, and that she trained on Monday morning.

"She's really quiet and she's usually really animated," Frankel said. "Maybe she's in heat. I don't know."

Ventura has won three major stakes in the last year - the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes at Belmont last June, the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita in October, and the Grade 1 Santa Monica Handicap at Santa Anita in January.

She has suffered narrow losses in her last two starts - runner-up finishes in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita in March and the Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland in April. Owned by Juddmonte Farms, Ventura has won 8 of 18 starts and $1,659,470.
