Venezia Award to Edgar Prado

Jockey Edgar Prado was named the winner of the Mike Venezia Award, honoring jockeys who exemplify extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship. The award, given by the New York Racing Association, honors Venezia, the jockey who was killed in a spill at Belmont Park on Oct. 13, 1988.

Prado won the award based on the votes of fellow jockeys, turf writers, and an online vote by fans. Prado won the award over finalists Mark Guidry and Calvin Borel.

Prado, 39, who won the Kentucky Derby aboard Barbaro, is heavily involved with Belmont Park's daycare center, Anna House, which provides care for the children of backstretch workers.
