Vega sweeps stakes

Jockey Harry Vega swept both stakes for South Carolina resident 2-year-olds aboard heavy favorites at Philadelphia Park.

Vega guided No Mine for Me ($3) to a comfortable victory in the $45,475 Christopher Melser Memorial for colts and geldings. One race later, Vega collected his third win on the card in the $41,900 Donna Freyer for fillies when Suzy Smart ($4) held off Welcome Inn by a neck.

Both stakes were restricted to horses who spent at least 90 days in South Carolina.

No Mine for Me earned his third straight victory, despite drifting out badly through the stretch, to defeat Mr. Boxcar by 4 1/4 lengths.

No Mine for Me is now 2 for 2 since trainer Mike Pino claimed him on behalf of owner Daniel Ryan for $50,000 out of a maiden race at Delaware Park.

His time for 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:19.29.

In the companion stakes for fillies, Suzy Smart outdueled Welcome Inn early, got clear approaching the turn, then had to withstand a second move by 6-5 second choice Welcome Inn in deep stretch.

Suzy Smart, based in New Jersey with trainer Jim Ryerson, won her only previous start, in early November at the Meadowlands. The winning time for 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:20.69.
