Vazquez has two big threats

NEW ORLEANS - Trainer Gamaliel Vazquez has a powerful tandem entered for owner Michael Gill in Thursday's feature race at Fair Grounds, an optional claiming race with a $62,500 tag at about 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

competed in graded stakes last year and has bankrolled $209,654 in his career while posting a 7-4-5 record in 36 turf starts. Wudantunoit finished second for a $50,000 claiming price on Dec. 12, when he failed to carry his speed all the way over a dead turf course that was tough on front-runners.

"I really have no other spot to run him in," Vazquez said of Wudantunoit. "I'm not sure I'm going to run them both, but that one should run."

The nine-horse field includes several other grass runners with the credentials to win.

finished second to Lac Laronge at 5 1/2 furlongs last out, an effort that was flattered after Lac Laronge returned to win Sunday's feature race. A 5-year-old gelding trained by Mark Frostad, Parasail should appreciate the added distance.

has plenty of experience over the Fair Grounds grass, running 18 times over the course with six victories and two second-place finishes. He has bankrolled $255,925 in 44 lifetime turf starts.

Mighty Military finished fifth in his last out Dec. 31, beaten 1 3/4 lengths by America Alive, who returned to win the Col. Bradley Handicap on Saturday. Spruce's Prince, a 4-year-old Louisiana-bred, finished fourth in the same race Dec. 31 after briefly taking the lead.

Dynareign, trained by Steve Asmussen, has been working well for his first start since November. A 5-year-old son of Dynaformer, Dynareign is 4-4-5 in 22 lifetime starts.

The Looper, trained by Neil Howard, has been off since Oct. 30, when he finished well for second in an allowance race.

Majestic Thief has run well over the track and has a record of 3-3-2 in 10 starts at Fair Grounds, including a victory in last year's off-the-turf renewal of the Mardi Gras Handicap.

The undercard is topped by a competitive nonwinners-of-one-other-than allowance sprint that pits Mystic Runner against Bellagio Bob, both of whom finished second at this level last time out. Also in the race is Sidebuster B, a Louisiana-bred who finished third in the Champions Day Sprint last month.
