Vannacide solid in Spicy repeat bid

AURORA, Colo. - Vannacide is a solid choice to repeat Saturday at Arapahoe Park in the $25,000 Spicy Handicap. She is coming off a score in the Columbine and will face similar company in the 1 1/16-mile Spicy. The statebred race for fillies and mares attracted a field of eight.

Vannacide pulled off a mild upset in winning the 1 1/16-mile Columbine on July 27, drawing clear by 1 1/2 lengths over the odds-on favorite She's Outrageous. Vannicide, trained by Kenneth Gleason, captured the Spicy last season by seven widening lengths. The 7-year-old has won 12 of 32 starts and finished on the board in 10 others for owner/breeder Bill Vanlandingham. Orlando Martinez has the return call.

She's Outrageous will need to regroup after her seventh-place effort in the Columbine. She never got into the race after breaking in a tangle and was beaten by 22 lengths. She had figured to contest the pace but never factored in the outcome.

She's Outrageous won the Ingrid Knotts by three lengths on May 31 in her only other start this meet. The main threat to Vannacide, she has posted a bullet work since the Columbine. Anthony Lovato comes in to ride for trainer Walter Harris.

Kranky Karol will need to turn in a top effort considering the distance of the Spicy, but of the others appears the most capable of pulling off an upset. She finished second in both the Knotts and Molly Brown earlier in the meeting at six furlongs. Kranky Karol is trained by James Jones and will again be ridden by Richard Vicchrilli.
