Vancouver to shuttle to Ashford Stud

Australian champion Vancouver will shuttle to Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., for the 2017 Northern Hemisphere breeding season.

The 4-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro debuted at stud this summer at Coolmore Australia during the Southern Hemisphere season. A fee will be announced at a later time.

Vancouver retired with four wins in five starts, earning $1,845,530 for the Coolmore partnership and trainer Gai Waterhouse. He was named Australia’s champion 2-year-old male during the 2014-15 racing season, with wins in the Group 1 Golden Slipper, Group 2 Todman Stakes, and Group 3 Canonbury Stakes.

“I saw Vancouver in Australia last week, and he’s an exceptionally good-looking individual who should sire both racehorses and sales horses,” Ashford Stud manager Dermot Ryan said. “I think U.S. breeders will be very impressed when they see him.”

Bred in Australia by Fairway Thoroughbreds, Vancouver is out of the stakes-placed Danehill mare Skates, whose 10 foals to race are all winners, also including Australian Group 1 winner Juste Momente and stakes winner Captain Coltish.\

Second dam Skating, herself an Australian Group 1 winner, is the pivot point for runners including Group 3 winner Murtajill and stakes winners Bradbury’s Luck, Sunset Run, and Zauberin.

“He’s by a very good sire in Medaglia d’Oro and is proving extremely fertile with nearly 50 mares already scanned in foal,” Ryan said. “Our sire sensation Uncle Mo was also an unbeaten champion juvenile at 2, as was Shanghai Bobby whose first yearlings were very well received this fall and who Vancouver very much reminds me of. It all bodes very well for the future.”
