VanBebber, Brossette score again in Championship

Panther Mountain ($43.80) returns to the Los Alamitos winner's circle under jockey Alvin "Bubba" Brossette after winning the Grade 1, $300,000 MBNA America Challenge Championship on Saturday night at Los Alamitos.

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - Trainer Janet VanBebber and jockey Alvin "Bubba" Brossette scored their third straight wins in the Grade 1, $300,000 when Panther Mountain upset even-money favorite Catchmeinyourdreams on Saturday night at Los Alamitos.

The 440-yard Challenge Championship was the headliner on a 13-race program that featured five Grade 1 stakes.

Guy Weimer's PantherMountain, at 20-1, held off Kirk Goodfellow's Catchmeinyourdreams by a neck to get the win in a sharp 21.457 seconds, the second-fastest time in the stake's 11 runnings.

Streakin Sin Tacha, the 2002 co-world champion, set the stakes record for VanBebber and Brossette last year with a 21.27 second time at Lone Star Park. The trainer-jockey team started their championship winning streak in 2001 with 2001 world champion Tailor Fit.

Panther Mountain, winner of the 2001 Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby, came into the Challenge Championship off a fifth-place effort in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Championship on Sept. 27.

"This race showed that it is imperative that a horse have a race over the track," VanBebber said. "That is why he ran in the Los Alamitos Championship."

The Challenge Championship victory gives Panther Mountain a berth in the Grade1 $500,000 Champion Of Champions on Dec. 13.

Michael Taylor's Zookie Street finished third.

Mexican invader takes Derby

Antonio Fernandez Chedragui's Prima LD, winner of eight of 11 starts in Mexico, made a winning United States debut and set off a jubilant winner's circle celebration by winning the Grade 1, $175,000 Bayer Legend Derby Challenge Championship.

Trained by Angela Aquino and ridden by Armando Andrade, Prima Lad scored her sixth straight victory by racing the 400 yards in 19.627 seconds. She won by a nose over Coronas Prospect, owned by TCB Racing.

Joyce Ericson's A Special Sno Flo finished third.

Schvaneveldt wins Juvenile for third time

All-time leading Los Alamitos trainer Blane Schvaneveldt won the American Airlines Juvenile Challenge Championship for the third time when Willie Works raced to a 1-1/4 length decision in the Grade 1, $150,000 stakes.

Willie Works, owned by Reed Pierson and Brad Stevenson, was timed in an excellent 17.367 seconds for the 350 yards.

Schvaneveldt also won this race with First Gray Down (1993) and Ronnie Jace (2001).

Redman Running was second and None As Easy finished third.

Sterling Sport gives Harbor Beach first Los Al defeat

Sterling Sport, owned by Muller Racing, handed Harbor Beach his first Los Alamitos defeat by winning the Grade 1, $100,000 John Deere Distance Challenge over 870 yards.

The Denny Ekins-trained Sterling Sport covered the 870 yards in 45.352 seconds to defeat a determined Harbor Beach by 3/4 length.

Special D Dash was third.

Sterling Sport has four wins and two seconds from six 2003 starts.

Royaltime Classic best in Distaff

Jose and Victor Diaz's Royaltime Classic, the 6-5 favorite, handled Mini Rock by a length to win the Grade 1, $100,000 Ford Distaff Challenge in 19.628 seconds for the 400 yards.

The John Bassett-trained Royaltime Classic earned the favorite's role after finishing just a nose behind champion AB What A Runner in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Handicap on Sept. 13.

This Candys Special, also from the Bassett barn, finished third.

Childers takes Golden State Futurity

Ninety-one-year-old Spencer Childers won the richest race of his hall of fame career when his homebred Be A Bono won the Grade 1, $864,850 Golden State Futurity on Friday night at Los Alamitos.

Trained by Dan Francisco and ridden by G.R. Carter, Be A Bono raced the 400 yards in a stakes record 19.58 seconds.

Babe On The Fly was second and 8-5 favorite Righteous Brother was third in the second richest race this year at Los Alamitos.

Be A Bono will now point to the Grade 1, $1.35 million (est.) Los Alamitos Million.
