Van Berg joins cancer campaign

Tom Van Berg, who recently dispersed his stable to focus on the health of his 3-year-old son, will participate in the St. Baldrick's national campaign to raise awareness of and funds to cure childhood cancer.

Tanner Van Berg was diagnosed with leukemia in late December and has started a chemotherapy program in Louisville, Ky., designed to last more than three years.

The family is seeking sponsors for when Tom Van Berg, 39, has his head shaved during a St. Baldrick's function Sunday afternoon in downtown Louisville.

Van Berg vanned the last four horses in his midsized stable to his father, Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg, at Oaklawn Park in January. Tom Van Berg and his wife, Angie, also have a 17-month-old son. Angie is gainfully employed with insurance benefits as the family tries to cope with Tanner's illness.

Contributions can be made at , and by clicking on "find a participant" and entering Tom Van Berg or Team: Van Bald Berg. St. Baldrick's raised nearly $13 million last year.
