Val Royal King of Mile

ELMONT, N.Y. - Val Royal ran the fastest Breeders' Cup Mile in history on his way to victory in a time of 1:32.05 on the turf course at Belmont Park.

Val Royal, who came into the Breeders' Cup off a win in the Oak Tree Mile, sat far back off a fast pace in the 12-horse Mile and came rolling wide through the stretch to win by 1 3/4 lengths over Forbidden Apple who finished second.

City Zip cut out suicidal fractions of :22.79, and :45.49 into a stiff wind on the backstretch at Belmont. Val Royal came around the field as the speed horses tired, and won easily under jockey Jose Valdivia. The win was Valdivia's first in Breeders' Cup competition.

Val Royal is trained by Julio Canani, who won the Mile for the second time in the last three years after also training Silic to victory in this race in 1999. Val Royal paid $12.20 to win. The exacta with Forbidden Apple paid $105.50. It was another three-quarters of a lengths back to Bach who finished third.
