Usuals rule at Bay Meadows meet


A historic Bay Meadows winter meeting that saw Russell Baze surpass Laffit Pincay Jr. as the winningest rider in racing history saw Baze and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer again dominate the standings.

Baze won his 37th consecutive title in meets at which he has competed, riding 65 winners. Roberto Gonzalez was second with 38 wins. Chad Schvaneveldt had 31, and newcomers Juan Ochoa and Kyle Kaenel had 29 and 28.

Hollendorfer won his 34th straight training title, notching 49 victories, 20 more than the runner-up, Art Sherman. Steve Miyadi was third with 23. Billy Morey had 13, with Ed Moger Jr., Brian Koriner, and Lloyd Mason tying for fifth with 11.

The average daily ontrack handle on live Bay Meadows races for the 46-day meet, which saw one day's card canceled after two races, was $603,006, for a total of $27,738,316. The all-sources handle was $133,624,649, an average of $2,904,883 per day. There was no corresponding meet run in 2005 to make a basis for comparing figures.

Attendance was 128,106 for a daily average of 2,786.
