As usual, Gomez has a good one

The standard for early season 2-year-old Quarter Horses is quite high for trainer Jaime Gomez. He has won eight runnings of the Kindergarten Futurity, annually the season's first futurity, including four of the last five.

The figure may increase in Gomez's favor on Saturday when All N The Jeans starts as the favorite in the $362,300 Kindergarten at Los Alamitos.

"I have really strong feelings about this filly," Gomez said on Wednesday. "I think it's another one we can count on."

Owned by Bobby Cox, All N The Jeans won the first of nine divisions of the time trials by 2 1/4 lengths in 15.188 seconds on May 1, just missing Jess You and I's track record of 15.17. Since the trial win, All N The Jeans has progressed without incident, Gomez said.

"She didn't get too tired in that race," Gomez said. "She's really sound. She's stood in the gate twice and she was fine."

All N The Jeans, who beat maidens in her career debut on April 9, is part of a field of 10 in the Kindergarten. Carlos Huerta has the mount.

The other qualifiers are Kool Cowboy, Star in the East, Separate Hawk, Carburator, West Coast Hawk, Atonement, Personal Glory, Julias Walkthru Fire, and Hawkish Town.

Hawkish Town won a random shake for the 10th qualifying position on May 2 after finishing second in the second of nine trials in 15.472 seconds, the same time as Leave the Scene, who finished second to Star in the East in the sixth division.

Hawkish Town is one of three finalists in the race for Balgo Racing, which also starts the undefeated West Coast Hawk and Star in the East. All three are trained by Jose Flores.

Cox, the leading Quarter Horse owner in the nation in 2004, also starts the undefeated Carburator and Atonement, who finished third in the eighth division. Gomez trains Atonement, while Joe Bassett trains Carburator.

Carburator finished a half-length in front of Hawkish Town in the trials, leaving Cox impressed with his performance in the final 100 yards

"[Carburator] bears down at the end," Cox said after the trial.

There are four unbeaten starters in the Kindergarten: All N The Jeans, Carburato, West Coast Hawk, and Julias Walkthru Fire, who won a maiden race in April and a division of the trials.
