Upcoming meet features 73 stakes

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Santa Anita has made few changes to the stakes schedule for its upcoming 2006-07 winter-spring meeting, which runs from Dec. 26 to April 22.

There are 73 stakes on the schedule, highlighted by 10 Grade 1 races, including the $250,000 Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds on opening day; the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap over 1 1/4 miles on March 3; and the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby for 3-year-olds on April 7.

One race has been added to the schedule, the $75,000 Impressive Luck Handicap on the hillside turf course on Jan. 10. The race was previously run as a restricted overnight race.

Two races have been renamed. The $200,000 Santa Catalina Stakes on March 3, a leading prep to the Santa Anita Derby, has been renamed the Robert B. Lewis Stakes in honor of the late Eclipse Award-winning owner.

The $75,000 Hill Rise Stakes for 2-year-olds over a mile on turf on Dec. 30 has been renamed the Eddie Logan Stakes, honoring the track's popular shoeshine vendor, who turned 96 in May.

One race has been given a purse increase. The Santa Paula Stakes for 3-year-old filly sprinters on April 1 has had its purse increased by $25,000 to $100,000.

The $100,000 Pro or Con Handicap for statebred females over a mile on turf has been moved from February to April 8.
