Unfurl the Flag retired


Unfurl the Flag, the winner of the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap in 2005, was retired recently because of a suspensory injury, according to co-owner Tom Harris.

Unfurl the Flag, 8, had not started since October 2006. During his five-year career from 2002 to 2006, Unfurl the Flag won 7 of 26 starts and $647,935. A gelding, he has been sent to the California Equine Retirement Foundation in Winchester, Calif., Harris said.

A son of Bertrando out of the Storm Cat mare Escape the Storm, Unfurl the Flag was bred in California by Pam and Marty Wygod. Trained by David Bernstein, Unfurl the Flag had his best season in 2005, winning 2 of 6 starts and earning $311,360. He won the Tiznow Stakes for statebreds and the Grade 1 Triple Bend in consecutive starts at Hollywood Park.

Plagued by minor injuries throughout his career, Unfurl the Flag never made more than six starts in a season.

Unfurl the Flag finished second in his final start, the War Chant Stakes at the 2006 Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting. He was being

pointed for the California Cup Mile in November 2006 when he was withdrawn when filling developed in a leg, Bernstein said at the time.
