Uncle Runt ($210.20) triumphs at 104-1 in maiden race


Uncle Runt was a memorable debut winner Friday at Gulfstream Park, where he captured a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds at 104-1. Uncle Runt paid $210.20.

The maiden race went as the fourth on the program. It was run over 4 1/2 furlongs. The purse was $50,000.

Uncle Runt set the pace and won by 1 1/4 lengths over Bal Harbor, the second choice. Uncle Runt covered the distance on a fast track in 51.73 seconds. Jose Garcia was aboard for Flying Finish Farm and trainer Rory Miller.

Uncle Runt is a gelding by First Dude. His dam, Now and Always, is by Stormello. Uncle Runt’s third dam, Jera, produced Jeranimo, a multiple Grade 1 winner who earned $1.5 million

Uncle Runt paid $31.40 to place and $14.20 to show. He topped a 4-5 exacta that paid $431.40 and a 4-5-7 trifecta that returned $1,288.70.  Frankie Apps, at 18-1, finished third in the race Friday.
