Unbridled's Song keeps producing speed

LAS VEGAS - Unbridled's Song is proving to be as impressive a stallion as he was a racehorse.

burst upon the racing season as a 2-year-old in 1995, winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in a stirring battle over Hennessy. From the first crop of Unbridled, a champion at 3 when he captured the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic, Unbridled's Song won the Florida Derby by 5 3/4 lengths in a tour de force over a stellar field that included Editor's Note (Belmont Stakes winner), Skip Away (Horse of the Year), and Louis Quatorze (Preakness winner).

After winning the Wood Memorial Stakes, foot problems plagued Unbridled's Song, who stands a giant 17 hands, but he nevertheless showed incredible heart to finish fifth in the Kentucky Derby when obviously not at his best physically.

Unbridled's Song got off to quick start at stud, siring the precocious Unbridled Time, who won the WHAS-11 Stakes at 2. His first crop included Unbridled Elaine, winner of the Breeders' Cup Distaff; Songandaprayer, the Fountain of Youth Stakes winner who is now a leading freshman sire; Grey Song, a Group 2 winner in Australia; Even the Score; Griffinite; Extend; Arianna's Passion; and Presently.

Buddha arrived in his second crop, and after winning the 2002 Wood Memorial was among the favorites for that year's Kentucky Derby. However, Buddha was injured and retired before the Triple Crown.

Unbridled's Song's stakes winners include Rockport Harbor, Splendid Blended, Marylebone, Domestic Dispute, Eurosilver, Last Song, Seducer's Song, Forest Music, Agnes Sonic, Cojet, and Zawzooth.

High speed influence

Unbridled's Song's runners are characterized by high speed, and last weekend, Unbridled Sidney, a $350,000 purchase at the 2002 Keeneland September yearling sale, became Unbridled's Song's latest stakes winner when she shattered the five-furlong record on Churchill Downs's turf course, winning the ungraded Zenobia Empress Handicap by 6 3/4 lengths in 55.54 seconds.

Unbridled Sidney is the result of mating Unbridled's Song to Baltic Sea (Danzig), a broodmare from an outstanding female family. Baltic Sea produced A Phenomenon Stakes winner Prospect Bay when bred to Crafty Prospector, and an even faster foal, Caller One, when bred to Phone Trick. A multiple stakes-winning sprinter, Caller One finished third in the 2001 Breeders' Cup Sprint and won the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in 2001 and 2002.

Baltic Sea's 1999 foal by Seattle Slew, Baltic Nations, sold for $975,000 as a weanling at the 2000 Keeneland November sale. Baltic Nations only won one of two starts, but like all of Baltic Sea's daughters, she automatically becomes a coveted broodmare because of her storied lineage.

Grey Flight influence

Baltic Sea was unraced, but since her tail-female family produced the highest-quality stakes winners over many generations, her value as a broodmare was immeasurable. Her dam, Renounce, was unplaced in two career starts, but that hardly mattered regarding her career as a broodmare. By Buckpasser, Renounce was out of the excellent producer Bold Princess (Bold Ruler-Grey Flight, by Mahmoud), winner of the 1962 Schuylerville Stakes. Bred to Judger, Renounce produced Arraign, the dam of multiple grass stakes winner Cozzene's Prince (Cozzene), and bred to Avatar, she produced stakes winner Waitlist.

Bold Princess produced three stakes winners by three different stallions: Intrepid Hero (Forli), Predictable (Tatan), and Primed (Pronto). She also produced stakes-placed Sovereign Dancer (Northern Dancer), who became a successful stallion, as well as Fantastic Flyer (Hoist the Flag), the dam of Formal Dinner; Brave Lady (Herbager); and Captain Courageous (Swaps).

After producing stakes winners by Ambiorix (Full Flight, Gray Phantom), Nasrullah (Misty Day), and Princequillo (Misty Flight and champion and Broodmare of the Year Misty Morn) in the 1950's, the Phipps family mated Grey Flight to Bold Ruler six times during the 1960's, resulting in three more stakes winners - Bold Princess, Bold Queen, and What a Pleasure, who became a leading stallion. Only twice in that decade did they stray from Bold Ruler, mating Grey Flight to Ribot (resulting in stakes winner Signore) and to Herbager (producing Quick Flight).

Grey Flight's other three foals by Bold Ruler were all fillies - Great Era, Clear Ceiling, and Pleasant Flight. Great Era was stakes placed, finishing second in the Matron, Spinaway, and Prioress, and died young after producing two foals. Clear Ceiling won her debut by 10 lengths at Belmont, but her biggest impact was as a broodmare. Her daughters Pure Profit (Key to the Mint), Infinite, and How High the Moon (both by Majestic Light) became important broodmares. Pure Profit produced champion Inside Information and stakes winners Educated Risk, Diamond, and stakes-placed Hidden Reserve. Infinite won the Garden City Stakes and placed in the Yellow Ribbon Invitational Stakes and the Diana and Athenia handicaps. How High the Moon produced Double Sunrise (Slew o' Gold), the dam of champion sprinter Kona Gold. Pleasant Flight only won once in 15 starts, but she, too, became a valuable commodity in the breeding shed.

Pleasant Flight is the third dam of champion European miler Priolo, and is also the third dam of multiple stakes winner Cassidy. Pleasant Flight is also the dam of stakes winner Flitalong (Herbager) and the unraced mare Illuminating (Majestic Light), the dam of Comely Stakes winner Private Light.

Unbridled Sidney, a stakes winner with high speed, should follow in the footsteps of her illustrious ancestors and become a valuable broodmare.
