Unbridled: Hal's Image breaks through

Hal's Image wins the $100,000 Unbridled Stakes at Calder on Saturday.

Hal's Image, who has struggled to win his first-level allowance condition since winning his maiden at Calder last July, and with only that single victory in 15 previous starts, readily overtook the 3-2 favorite, Favre, on the final turn and drew away to a 4 3/4-length victory in the $100,000 Unbridled Stakes.

Hal's Image, a half-brother to the 2000 Florida Derby winner, Hal's Hope, covered the 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in 1:48.89 and returned $21.60.

As expected, Favre set the pace after breaking alertly from the rail, with Hal's Image and jockey Carlos Olivero hot on his heels. Hal's Image easily disposed of the favorite after six furlongs, then extended his advantage through the stretch. Talented Prince outgamed Captain Lindsay by a neck to finish second, with Favre tiring badly to finish a disappointing sixth in a field of 10 3-year-olds.

Trainer Barry Rose said Hal's Image would be sent to Pimlico for the Preakness Stakes on May 21.
