Unbeaten filly breaks down

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Longshot Dark Ending captured Monday's Grade 1 Selene Stakes at Woodbine as 3-5 favorite Treasureinmyhand broke down.

Treasureinmyhand, previously unbeaten in three starts, went right to the front in the 1 1/16-mile event, but veered out sharply on the first turn and impeded Giving Noreen, Penny Perfect, and Transcendental. She was pulled up by Gary Boulanger, and an examination detected multiple fractures in her right fore. She subsequently was euthanized.

Turner's Hall inherited the lead and set fractions of 23.69 seconds, 48.89, and 1:14.23 in the slop while being tracked by Dark Ending. Dark Ending overhauled Turner's Hall nearing the eighth pole and coasted home on top by 3 1/2 lengths in a final time of 1:48.02. Royal Fact was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third in the seven-horse field of 3-year-old fillies.

"I dropped my horse to the rail and had a perfect trip," said winning rider Patrick Husbands. "I stayed away from all the commotion going into the first bend. I got her behind horses, where she had a chance to relax, and she kicked on down the lane."

Dark Ending ($41.90) banked $164,850 of the $274,750 purse for owner Mockingbird Farm Inc. and trainer Mark Casse.
