Umpateedle a winner at Pimlico

Racing at her fourth different track since Jan. 30, the Mark Shuman-trained Umpateedle sprung a mild upset in Saturday's $50,000 Primonetta for fillies and mares at Pimlico.

Umpateedle, the fourth choice in the betting, led by a half-length early under leading rider Ramon Dominguez, then was stuck on the rail inside Balmy as the two ding-donged head to head for the lead around the turn.

Balmy inched ahead in early stretch but Dominguez roused Umpateedle with the whip and she surged past Balmy about 20 yards from the wire and won going away by 1 1/4 lengths.

"Down the lane it felt as if she was doing as little as she had to do to stay in front of the other filly," Dominguez said. "She really showed a lot of courage."

Umpateedle ran the six furlongs over a good track in 1:11.02 and paid $10.60. Balmy held second to complete a $63 exacta. Bronze Abe, the 6-5 favorite, never threatened, running third.
