Two would benefit from surface switch

It isn't often that a stakes scheduled for the turf would look even better if it were run on the dirt.

Sunday's feature at River Downs, the $50,000 Sydney Gendelman Memorial for older Ohio-breds at 1 1/16 miles, just may be such a race.

The two horses most affected by the Gendelman being on the turf are Majestic Dinner and Taylortwofeathers.

Majestic Dinner was the dominant older horse in Ohio at the end of 2001, winning stakes ranging in length from six furlongs to 1 1/4 miles, but he finished a dull sixth in last year's Gendelman, and did not take to the turf in his only other attempt. His winning streak is now at five after he captured two allowances this year.

Taylortwofeathers, who had a rather undistinguished career until this spring, earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 104 winning his third straight in a starter allowance that was transferred from turf to dirt.

A son of Cherokee Run, Taylortwofeathers is at a point now where he can make an impact against stakes company, but his moderate turf pedigree is of concern.

With the Gendelman likely to remain on turf, the focus shifts to Devil Time, who has become a different horse since moving to the grass last summer.

Following a win against $25,000 claimers at Kentucky Downs, Devil Time stepped up to the three-other-than allowance level at Churchill two starts later and pulled off a 10-1 upset.

Devil Time has never been out of the money in five starts on grass, and he was beaten by only a head in an optional claimer at Churchill in his seasonal debut last month.

Alce Canadense and Rhythmean both have solid turf credentials.

Alce Canadense has won three of four on the River Downs turf, though his one loss came in last year's Gendelman, where he was seventh as the beaten favorite. He has won his last two races, the latter a starter allowance.

Rhythmean wasn't overly consistent last year, but among his two wins was the Labor Day Handicap over the turf at Mountaineer.
