CALGARY, Alberta - A Shaky Start, confidently ridden by Leanne Painter, picked up where she left off by winning the $50,000 Sales Handicap for older fillies and mares at Stampede Park last Saturday.

Code Name Fred ($4) won the older colts and geldings division of the Sales with a strong stretch drive under Frank Gonsalves.

A Shaky Start ($3) carried high weight of 124 pounds, a pound more than she carried in her nine-length romp in the inaugural running of the filly and mare division of the Sales last fall.

The win was a nice beginning to the day as A Shaky Start was crowned champion of her division for 2004 at the Night of Champions awards banquet later that night.

A Shaky Start also was named top Alberta-bred, sending Al and Bunny Noren to the podium to accept the trophy as leading breeders in the province.

Deputy Country won three trophies - for top sprinter, older horse, and horse of the year - following a campaign in which he recorded six stakes victories. Earlier in the day, Deputy County finished second in a six-furlong allowance that served as the major prep to the $50,000 Stampede Park Sprint Championship on April 30.

Poor Iggy was named champion 2-year-old colt and Miss Venturous top 2-year-old filly. Delta Epsilon was named champion claimer and Shy Lil was best 3-year-old filly. Controlled Meeting edged out Kat Kool for honors in the 3-year-old colts and geldings division.
