Way Out West conquered two turns in his first attempt Saturday when he won the $40,000 CTBA Derby by a length over even-money favorite Whiskeydrunkagain at Arapahoe Park. It was another 12 lengths back to Jete in third.  The CTBA Derby is a 1 1/16-miles race restricted to 3-year-olds bred in Colorado. Way Out West brought a supportive pedigree into the stakes as a son of 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus. Way Out West ($4.80) tracked Whiskeydrunkagain through an opening half-mile in 48.32 seconds and 1:14.06 for six furlongs. Way Out West took the lead in the stretch and went on to cover the distance on a track rated fast in 1:48.08. David Cardoso was aboard the winner for trainer Tyrone Gleason. Way Out West was winning the third stakes race of his career behind the $46,000 CTBA Futurity and the $54,000 Silver Cup Futurity. Those wins came last year at Arapahoe. Way Out West earned $26,151 for his win in the CTBA Derby to improve his record to three wins from seven starts for earnings of $92,650. He races for Kent Bamford and Randy Patterson.
