Two riders dominate weekend

CALGARY, Alberta - The weekend at Stampede Park belonged to riders Quincy Welch and Desmond Bryan, who accumulated six wins apiece, including all eight races on Saturday's card.

Welch capped Saturday's card with a win aboard My Guy in the Hoofprint on My Heart. It was the fourth win of the afternoon for Welch, matching Bryan's total on the day.

The Hoofprint on My Heart, the final major stakes prep for the $125,000 Alberta Derby here June 17, was contested over a sloppy surface that favored speed throughout the weekend.

Welch earned the tally aboard a very game My Guy, who appeared beaten by Top Authority turning for home but dug in to post a nose decision. It was 10 1/2 lengths back to Napinowaan in third. My Guy finished the mile in 1:40.40.

On Sunday, Bryan rode Mia Cat Dancer to an upset victory in the $50,000 Lilac, in which Mia Cat Dancer drew off in the lane to win by 14 lengths.

Mia Cat Dancer ($29.30) handled the one-mile distance and the surface well and won with Bryan easing her up in the final sixteenth.

Kaylee's Magic, Alberta's 2005 horse of the year, was a late scratch, as her connections opted out after the second race was run.

Mia Cat Dancer, one of two Lilac runners saddled by trainer Ernie Keller, completed the mile in 1:40.40.
