Two outages at Fairmount

The equivalent of an entire race card was lost at Fairmount Park last weekend when separate power outages left parts of the track dark, forcing the cancellation of racing after two races on Friday and five races on Saturday.

One race that did make it into the books Saturday night was the $14,520 Jovial John Handicap for older horses. Oust ($6.80), who scored a minor upset win in the Tex's Zing Handicap 12 days earlier, led gate to wire to win the Jovial John by four lengths over Rick's Tavern. The Jovial John was Oust's meet-leading sixth victory. Ridden by Juan Molina, Oust covered a mile and 70 yards in 1:45.60.

Guccione, whose perfect record at Fairmount ended in the Tex's Zing when he dumped his rider at the start, was favored to rebound in the Jovial John, but faded to fourth after pressing Oust most of the way.

* Saturday's featured Apple Shiner Handicap for fillies and mares at a mile and 70 yards is the final overnight handicap of the meet, which runs through Sept. 29. There will be no more stakes here this year as both the St. Louis Derby and the Circle C Classic Handicap, originally scheduled for Aug. 25, were canceled earlier in the meet.
