Two millionaires in Rainbow Derby

DM Shicago, winner of the All American Futurity, will be challenged by fellow millionaire Ocean Runaway in a strong Grade 1, $407,958 Rainbow Derby on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

DM Shicago, the 2004 champion 2-year-old gelding, is after his third straight Grade 1 victory at the New Mexico mountain track after concluding his juvenile season with a victory there in the $2 million All American Futurity and returning from a winter's rest to win the $273,935 Ruidoso Derby. He has made each of his eight career starts at Ruidoso, with four wins and $1,194,098 in earnings.

In the Rainbow trials, DM Shicago rolled to a three-length victory in 21.257 seconds for 440 yards, the sixth-fastest qualifying time.

Champion 2-year-old Ocean Runaway earned the bulk of his $1,158,808 at Los Alamitos. He became the first Quarter Horse to win two $1 million futurities, taking the Golden State Million and the Los Alamitos Million. After that Los Alamitos Million victory on Dec. 10, he was laid off and came back at Ruidoso for the Rainbow trials, finishing a nose behind the fastest qualifier, Mighty Invictus.

Mighty Invictus, a 21.200-second trial winner, was also the fastest qualifier to the All American Futurity and third behind DM Shicago in the Ruidoso Derby.

Also in the Rainbow Derby are the 2004 Rainbow Futurity winner, Thewayouwantmeto; the 2004 West Texas Futurity winner, A Stone Runaway; the 2004 Sunland Fall Futurity winner, Cowboys N Injuns; and All American Futurity third-place finisher Devons Signature.

Leading Spirit chases $4 million

The undefeated juvenile Leading Spirit will be the solid favorite to stay on track for a $4 million bonus in the Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity on Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

Leading Spirit won the Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity, and if he wins the Rainbow Futurity and the All American Futurity, his connections will collect a $4 million bonus.

Leading Spirit has given every indication he is capable of earning the rich bonus, with 6 wins from 6 starts, including a near-world-record 14.92-second win in the 300-yard West Texas Futurity, and his one-length victory in the $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity as the 3-5 favorite.

He highlighted the 16 Ruidoso Futurity trials on July 7 with a half-length win with the fastest time of 19.566 seconds for 400 yards.

Challenging Leading Spirit will be the Grade 2 Remington Park Futurity winner Crater Lake; the Grade 2 Lazy E Futurity winner PYC Paint Your Wagon; the Ruidoso Juvenile winner Texas Sixes; and the promising Jess Meganette, winner of her two starts.

Bombay Martini the Arapahoe choice

The Heritage Place Derby winner Bombay Martini will try for his fourth straight victory in the Grade 3, $44,640 Bayer Legend West/ Southwest Derby Challenge on Sunday at Arapahoe Park.

The goal for Bombay Martini is to take the Bayer Legend West/Southwest Derby and earn an invitation to the Grade 1, $175,000 Bayer Legend Derby Challenge Championship on Nov. 5 at Los Alamitos. He will be favored to attain that goal after winning the Heritage Place Derby and then setting the fastest qualifying time to the Bayer Legend West/Southwest Derby in his two latest starts. He won his trial by three-quarters of a length over the second-fastest qualifier, Baby La Jolla.
