Two mares bring $190k at sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Two $190,000 mares topped a strong auction at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's winter mixed sale Monday at Newtown Paddocks.

The auction showed gains across the board over last year as 248 lots brought $2,829,100 in total revenue, up 12 percent from 2001, when 272 lots sold. Average price rose 23 percent to $11,408, and median gained 13 percent to $5,200.

The first $190,000 mare through the ring was Joying, a stakes-placed Storm Cat mare that David and Ginger Mullins, agent, sold to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Stautberg. Joying was sold in foal to Old Trieste.

Later, the Clever Trick mare Rills, in foal to Thunder Gulch, hit the $190,000 mark. White Cross Bloodstock purchased Rills, a Grade 3-placed daughter of I'm Out (Lord Gaylord). FitzGerald/Keogh, agent, sold the mare.

A $70,000 no-guarantee season to Taylor Made stallion Unbridled's Song topped a Stallion Access auction of seasons and shares after the Fasig-Tipton sale. The buyer wasn't identified.
