Two declared from Oaks Future Wager

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - By the Light and Sea Chanter both were declared out of contention Wednesday for the 134th Kentucky Oaks, leaving 21 separately listed fillies in the active lineup for Pool 1 of the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which runs Thursday through Sunday.

By the Light, the undefeated winner of the $300,000 Delta Princess, recently underwent surgery to have a small chip removed from an ankle, according to Samantha Siegel, a principal in the filly's ownership, Jay Em Ess Stable. Such surgery typically takes at least a few months from which to recuperate, a development that precludes the filly from running in the May 2 Oaks at Churchill Downs.

Sea Chanter, a Stonerside Stable homebred whose six career races have all been on turf, will be pointed for a summer grass campaign and is not under consideration for the Oaks, according to trainer Todd Pletcher. "We decided to freshen her up and focus on a summer turf program," Pletcher told Churchill officials.

By the Light, trained by Richard Dutrow and based most recently at the Fair Grounds, had won all four of her starts by a combined 19 1/2 lengths, most recently ending with a 5 1/4-length triumph in the Dec. 7 Delta Princess at Delta Downs. The New York-bred filly, by Malibu Moon, won her first three races in statebred company.

Sea Chanter, by War Chant, has won three races, most notably the Grade 3 Miesque Stakes in her most recent start Nov. 24 at Hollywood Park.

Churchill finalized the Pool 1 lineups early Tuesday and did not receive notification about either defection from the Oaks until after it was too late to make the appropriate substitutions. By the Light is listed as No. 5 and Sea Chanter is No. 20. Both will remain listed among the lineup of 23 fillies, although Churchill will not accept wagers on either of them.

The mutuel field, the 24th or "all others" option, is listed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite for Oaks Pool 1, which runs concurrently with the opening pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager at racetracks and wagering outlets throughout North America. Pool 2 is set for March 6-9 and Pool 3 from April 3-6.
