Two closers figure to get good setup

CALGARY, Alberta - Horsemen thinking of entering their horses for Wednesday's card must have had some trepidation as the rain pelted down on Saturday.

But the general consensus was for sunny skies on Wednesday, which attracted enough optimists to produce a nine-race program following a weekend plagued by rain.

The feature race on the Wednesday evening program is a wide-open affair matching six sprinters in an allowance/optional $40,000 claimer.

Speedsters Smokem Ninetynine, Freud's Cure, Controversial Case, and Guitars N Cadillacs could set the table for closers Ecton's Gem and Mocha John.

Star Prospector wins derby prep

Star Prospector won last Saturday's Hoofprint on My Heart Stakes - the final prep for the June 14 Alberta Derby - under Quincy Welch. Star Prospector covered the mile in 1:40.40 on a sloppy surface that favored speed throughout the day.

Cool Ventura ran second under a ground-saving ride from Real Simard, while Ballintoy did not handle the going and faded to fourth after pressing the pace.

Lady Lev loved the slop

Lady Lev relished the off going in the Lilac on Sunday, romping home the easiest of winners under Shannon Beauregard with the rest of the four-horse field strung out far behind.

Longtime trainer Red McKenzie celebrated his first stakes win in a long time with Lady Lev, and he received congratulations from quite a few horsemen and fans.

Littlemiss Allison, the odds-on favorite, was distanced, finishing last.
