Two Breeders' Cup berths on line in Australia

Automatic berths for two Breeders’ Cup races at Keeneland in October will be awarded to the winners of seven-figure stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Australia on Saturday.

The winner of the $2,292,000 Doncaster Mile on turf will get an automatic berth for the BC Mile, while the winner of the $1,910,000 Darley T.J. Smith Stakes will earn a spot in the BC Turf Sprint.

The Doncaster Mile, a Group 1 handicap, will have a maximum field of 20 and is led by Sacred Falls, the winner of the race in 2013 and 2014, and Hallowed Crown, the winner of two group stakes this year, including the Group 1 Randwick Guineas.

Sacred Falls was second in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill on March 21. Hallowed Crown, trained by the legendary Bart Cummings and his grandson James, was third in the Rosehill Guineas on March 21.

The T.J. Smith Stakes is run at about six furlongs and drew a field of 11.

The expected favorite is the 5-year-old gelding Terravista, who was a multiple stakes winner last year and was third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap at six furlongs at Flemington Racecourse on March 14, his first start since November.

One of Terravista’s main rivals is Chautauqua, who won the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs this year and was second in the Newmarket Handicap.
