Twinspired wins the WEBN Stakes by 4 1/4 lengths under Jozbin Santana on Saturday night at Turfway Park.

Twinspired emerged a dominant winner Saturday night in the $50,000 WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park, surging to the front after turning for home and drawing off to capture the one-mile Polytrack race by 4 1/4 lengths under Jozbin Santana.

Based this winter at Gulfstream Park with trainer Mike Maker, Twinspired was coming off a respectable sixth-place finish in a Gulfstream turf stakes. Sent away the favorite in a field of 12 3-year-olds, he returned $5 after finishing in 1:41.57. R Fast Cat, an 18-1 shot, finished second, a head before Taptowne.

“I was on the best horse and I was on the outside, just waiting until the three-eighths pole to let the horse run,” Santana said. “My horse responded really well.”

Twinspired, a gray colt by Harlan’s Holiday, now has won twice in five career starts, with his lone prior victory coming in his only prior attempt on Polytrack. He is owned by the partnership of Alpha Stables, Skychai Racing, and Sand Dollar Stables.

With the victory, Twinspired becomes a prime candidate for the March 26 Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes, the annual showcase event at Turfway in Florence, Ky. Maker has won the Spiral, which has been run under a variety of names, on two prior occasions, including last year with Dean’s Kitten.

The Saturday program was the first at night at Turfway in many years. Except for March 26, the track will continue to run Saturday nights through the end of the meet, April 3.

Santana, meanwhile, has enjoyed a productive winter at Turfway but will ride regularly for the last time here Sunday. He is returning to Chicago for the Hawthorne meet that begins Friday. Penny Ffitch-Heyes will be his agent there.
