Twilight Blues a listed winner

Twilight Blues earned a place in the 2000 Guineas lineup with an impressive 2 1/2-length score at 6-1 in the listed European Free Handicap at Newmarket on Wednesday.

Placed in group races last year behind Rock of Gibraltar and Firebreak for trainer Brian Meehan, Twilight Blues, a son of Bluebird, came from last to first under Pat Eddery in the seven-furlong contest to defeat Approval, who is owned by Queen Elizabeth. The winning time was 1:24.88 on good to firm ground. Leo's Luckyman, the pacesetter in the UAE Derby, in which he eventually backed up to finish 13th of 14, came home fifth.

Indian Creek, a solid third behind Nayef in the Group 1 Champion Stakes in October, made his 4-year-old debut a winning one with a head victory over Island House in the Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes Wednesday. Richard Quinn brought Indian Creek, an Indian Ridge colt, from last place in the field of 11 to take the lead at the three-sixteenths pole, from which point he held on gamely to reward his backers at 11-1, clocking 1:49.66 for the straight 1 1/8 miles. Trainer David Elsworth said that Indian Creek could go next in the 1 1/4-mile Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown on April 27.
