TVG starts site in New York

EmailTelevision Games Network on Thursday launched an account-wagering website in New York on behalf of Yonkers Raceway, giving the company a legal foothold in the state for the first time.

The website, which will be open only to New York residents, will allow customers to place bets on a number of harness and Thoroughbred tracks, though the identity of those racetracks was not clear as of Thursday.

Under New York law, only racetracks or offtrack betting companies located in New York can operate account-wagering platforms. Yonkers received approval for the account-wagering platform last week from the New York State Racing and Wagering Board.

TVG officials on Thursday declined to comment about the platform and its operations beyond a release. Yonkers officials did not return phone calls.

TVG operates a national account-wagering platform that takes bets from customers in 12 states. Citing New York's restrictions on outside account-wagering companies, TVG has not allowed New York customers to open accounts for its national platform.

On Thursday, the tracks offered on the Yonkers website included Yonkers, the Meadowlands in New Jersey, and Maywood Park in Illinois.

The New York Racing Association, the operator of Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga, also operates its own account-wagering platform, and the Yonkers site will compete with NYRA for customers in New York.

TVG's contract with NYRA for out-of-state account-wagering rights on NYRA races expires at the end of this year.
