Tusayan rallies to win Bunty Lawless Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Tusayan ($7.70) captured the $126,600 Bunty Lawless Stakes for second time Sunday at Woodbine, after coming from well back in the one-mile grass test for Ontario-sired runners.

Tusayan bided his time about seven lengths in arrears after a half-mile, as All Star Lover and Archers Alyancer vied through honest fractions over a course rated firm. Tusayan commenced a wide rally exiting the turn, and hit the front at the sixteenth pole before edging away to prevail by three-quarters of a length over Decew Falls. Favored Arch Hall finished another head back in third in the nine-horse field.

"The race looked like it was going to set up for us," said Todd Kabel, who rode Tusayan for trainer Laurie Silvera. "I was a little concerned turning for home-I had to swing out pretty wide, but Laurie wanted him to be on the outside, if possible. It all worked out."

Tusayan ran the distance in 1:37.37 seconds, earning $75,000. He won the 2003 Bunty Lawless, and was second in last year's running.
