Slim Shady’s Lady pulled a 36-1 stunner Saturday when she held off favored Queen’s Award to win the $50,000 Holiday Inaugural, the first stakes of the holiday meet at Turfway Park.
Always on the lead with Ben Creed aboard, Slim Shady’s Lady shook off Lou’s Angel with a quarter-mile to go in the six-furlong Polytrack race, opened a sizable margin passing the eighth pole, and then had just enough to prevail by a neck over Queen’s Award, the 5-2 choice in a field of 12 fillies and mares. The winner returned $74 after finishing in 1:11.11.
Slim Shady’s Lady, a 3-year-old Indiana-bred filly by Spanish Steps, is owned by Darlene and Herbert Likens and trained by Ralph Martinez. She had raced mostly in statebred company this year when posting 3 wins and 2 seconds from 8 prior starts.
Lotta Lovin finished third, another 1 1/2 lengths behind, and was followed by Sally Sally in fourth.
The $2 exacta (6-2) paid $427.20; the $1 trifecta (6-2-1) returned $955.30; and the dime superfecta (6-2-1-8) was worth $528.50.
Two more $50,000 stakes are on the schedule for the holiday meet, which runs through Dec. 31: the Prairie Bayou on Dec. 15 and the Holiday Cheer on Dec. 29.
Best Bets
SHE'S STONES SIS stepped forward with first try at this distance three back, dueling the pace and then gamely denying the runnerup while well clear of the rest; fell short trying similar tactics last time but was again well clear in second, and there doesn't appear to be much other speed entered against her here. TAHOE TIGRESS was given a perfect trip and ride and it was just enough to track down 7/5 class-dropper Nuffsaid Nuffsaid last time; owns previous win over a mile.
