Turfway Park track report

A rare weekday stakes race is scheduled at Turfway Park on Friday, the result of racing being canceled last weekend because of unsafe track conditions. The rescheduled $50,000 Wintergreen Stakes highlights the 12-race card, featuring a field of 11 fillies and mares, including three Southern shippers.

Playa Maya, who based in New Orleans this winter, is one such shipper. A winner of 2 of 4 starts, she comes off a fast 4 1/2-length allowance triumph at Fair Grounds Jan. 23. Although that victory came on grass, trainer David Carroll anticipates her running as well on dirt.

"I wanted to get her in a one-other-than on dirt, but they were having trouble getting one to fill down here," he said from Fair Grounds. "So we went ahead and tried the grass. I thought her ability would be enough to win it."

His thoughts proved correct. She led from start to finish, winning easily.

Although early weather reports call for dry but cool conditions on Friday, rain is forecast for Thursday. If the track remains wet for Friday's races, that would put Bonay, another Fair Grounds invader, at a disadvantage. She has struggled in past efforts in the mud or slop.

She has been off form in recent months, but was third in the Grade 3 Tempted and the Grade 3 Comely at Aqueduct earlier in her career.

The likely favorite is Glitter Act, a recent two-other-than allowance winner at Gulfstream Park. A speedy filly, she has never been off the board in eight starts. She, like Playa Maya, is stakes placed, having finished third in the Dec. 6 My Charmer Stakes at Turfway.
