Turfway Park: Self Made Man holds them off

Self Made Man turned back several bids, leading all the way to register an 11-1 upset under Victor Lebron in the $50,000 Dust Commander Stakes at Turfway Park.

Owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trained by Mike Maker, Self Made Man took early command in the one-mile Polytrack race, and after turning back pace chasers Revival Ridge and Say It Son, he finished a length clear of Win Me Over, a 50-1 shot. High Blues rallied late to finish third, just a head back, while Jade's Revenge, the 8-5 favorite, was another three-quarters of a length back in fourth in a field of 10 older horses.

Self Made Man, a homebred 4-year-old gelding by Catienus, returned $24.80 after finishing in 1:37.86.

Self Made Man once had raced for as little as $7,500. The Dust Commander was his first stakes victory, and his fifth from 15 overall starts.

The trophy presentation was made by Mike Manganello, who rode Dust Commander to a 15-1 upset in the 1970 Kentucky Derby.
