Turfway Park: Jockey Bonnie Castaneda out of coma, will have surgery Friday

Jockey Bonnie Castaneda is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday at University Hospital in Cincinnati to repair two broken vertebrae she suffered in a spill at Turfway Park in northern Kentucky on Sunday.

Castaneda, 50, moved her arms and legs and was responsive Tuesday after being in a coma for about 48 hours, according to her husband, trainer and former rider Marco Castaneda.

“She has fractures in her neck, back, and ribs, and the doctors are being very careful with her in case there is a brain injury, too,” said Castaneda. “The vertebrae are the T-4 and T-5. They are planning on the surgery Friday and having her moved Monday to Cardinal Hill Hospital in Lexington.”

Marco Castaneda said doctors have told him they are taking things “step by step because of how serious everything is. It’s going to take a long time. We appreciate how much concern everyone has shown for Bonnie.”

Bonnie Castaneda was injured when her mount, Jolinda, clipped heels and fell in a $5,000 maiden-claiming event. She has ridden 230 winners since she began her riding career in 1995.
