Turfway Park cuts purses 25 percent

Purses at the current Turfway Park winter-spring meet are being cut 25 percent, effective with the 11-race Saturday card, track officials said Thursday.

The latest cut means the minimum purse will drop from $6,000 to $4,500. Track president Bob Elliston said a purse overpayment compared to 2011 dates is chiefly responsible for the purse cut, along with a 6 percent decline in all-sources handle.

The bad news comes a week after Kentucky legislators declined to put a referendum on casino gaming on the November ballot, a development that spells long-term trouble for Turfway, the northern Kentucky track that has seen business slump badly in recent years.

Turfway has been running since early December. The winter-spring meet runs through April 1, with the showcase race, the $500,000 Vinery Racing Spiral, set for March 24.
