Turfway: Mountain General holds on

Mountain General barely held off a steady rally by favored Sea of Tranquility to post a nose victory in the 17th running of the $75,000 Marfa Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Mountain General, ridden by John B. Luzzi Jr., stalked the pace set by Slider, then drew off in midstretch before narrowly holding on for his sixth victory in 17 starts. The winner finished 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.75 over a fast track and returned $16.60 as fourth choice in a field of seven older horses. Mountain General, a 4-year-old Mountain Cat colt, is owned by Keith Asmussen, whose son, Steve, trains him.
