Turfway: Gallant Secret rallies

Gallant Secret, third in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in 2005, picked up the first stakes victory of her career by winning the $50,000 Fairway Fun at Turfway Park by 2 1/2 lengths over Cape Hope.

As is her custom, Gallant Secret fell far off the early pace before launching a rally. For much of the race she settled in 11th in the field of 12, as eventual third-place finisher Quite a Ruckus set fractions of 47.50 seconds and 1:12.65 in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Leaving the turn, Gallant Secret began to rapidly advance on the leaders, and once set down in the lane, she easily had the closing kick necessary to surge past Cape Hope, who had taken the lead in midstretch. She raced 1 1/16 miles over the Polytrack surface in 1:46.03, paying $15.

A 4-year-old daughter of Menifee, Gallant Secret won for the fifth time in 19 starts for owner-breeder Elkorn Oaks Inc. Jockey James Graham was aboard the winner for trainer James Jackson.
