Turfway: Doc D rallies in Forego

Despite having to rally behind a slow early pace, Doc D was able to close to victory in the $50,000 Forego Stakes.

Turning back from routes to the 6 1/2-furlong Forego, Doc D settled in third, as Holiday Cheer winner Founding Chairman set leisurely splits of 23.13 seconds and 46.27. Midway around the turn, he began to pick up ground under jockey Jason Lumpkins, and through the stretch he proved dominant.

Doc D ran down Founding Chairman with less than a sixteenth of a mile remaining, and won by three-quarters of a length. Founding Chairman held second, a half-length in front of a rallying Mr Bassett.

The order of finish was completed by Twin Talk, favored Dubai Sheikh, Crowned Dancer, Gallatin Kid, and Holiday Doc. Wild Lies was scratched.

Doc D, a 5-year-old gelded son of Strodes Creek, raced 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.64 over a fast track and paid $26.60. He recorded his fourth win in 17 starts, boosting his earnings to $154,644 for owner John W. Rooker.
