Turfway: Discreet Hero by 14

Discreet Hero never gave his many backers an anxious moment when he cruised to a front-running, 14-length victory in the $50,000 Prairie Bayou Stakes at Turfway Park.

Ridden by the meet's leading jockey, Dean Sarvis, Discreet Hero returned $3 as part of a heavily favored entry trained by Bernie Flint. After breaking fastest of all among a field of seven older horses, Discreet Hero maintained a slight advantage until turning for home, where he steadily drew off to finish the 1 1/8-mile race in 1:47.52 over a fast track.

Doc D, the 9-2 third choice, nabbed second by a nose over Mr. Krisley, the rank outsider at 34-1. Ask the Lord, part of the Flint entry, was just another head back in fourth, while Bonus Pack, the 5-2 second choice, ran sixth.

Discreet Hero, a 6-year-old gelding whom Flint and R.A. Williams claimed for $40,000 in July, is having the best year of his career. In his last start, Discreet Hero easily captured the Nov. 13 Mountaineer Mile. The $31,300 winner's share from the Prairie Bayou lifts his career bankroll to nearly $470,000.
