Turfway: Champali does the expected

Champali continued his domination of the 3-year-olds who stayed in Kentucky for the winter by posting an easy victory in the $50,000 WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Champali, ridden by Jason Lumpkins, put away longshot Cajun Brogue in the final turn of the one-mile WEBN, then drew away to finish 2 3/4 lengths ahead of Chicken Soup Kid. Champali returned $3.40 and completed the distance in 1:40.51 over a fast track.

Honeagle, the 3-1 second choice, finished third, another three-quarters of a length behind in a field of seven. Tito's Beau, the 7-2 third choice, faded to fifth.

Champali, by Glitterman, is owned by Lloyd Madison Farms. He now has won 5 of 6 starts, including the Iroquois at Churchill Downs and the Prevue here last month. His only career defeat came in the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill last fall.

The WEBN Stakes is a prep for the March 1 John Battaglia Memorial and for the March 22 Lane's End Spiral Stakes. Trainer Greg Foley said he probably would aim Champali to both races.
