Turf War wins first stakes

EmailTurf War ($4.60), a full brother to recent Travers runner-up Grasshopper, captured his stakes debut in the $125,000 Swynford for 2-year-olds at Woodbine.

Turf War stalked the leaders on the outside under Patrick Husbands and wore down front-running Storm Code in deep stretch en route to a one-length win. Soca Tempo was a late-running third in the five-horse field.

Turf War ran the distance in 1:23.02 and banked $75,000 for Woodford Racing and trainer Mark Casse.

The undefeated Bear Holiday, who would have been the heavy favorite in the Swynford, was scratched by trainer Reade Baker because of a hind-end problem.

"He had trouble getting around his stall on Wednesday afternoon," Baker said. "He's got something high in behind bothering him. We walked him on Thursday and Friday. He was just off the tiniest bit [Saturday] morning. It's one of the new injuries that you get with Poly. We'll do a nuclear scintigraphy on him this week. We're hoping it's just a pulled muscle. If it's a stress fracture, he's going to have some time off."

* Siwa ($20.10) won the card's other stakes, the $126,200 La Prevoyante, in front-running style under Jono Jones.

Siwa set honest fractions on a clear lead in the one-mile event for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies. She held off 25-1 shot Galipette and favored You Will Love in the final furlong, scoring by a half-length over the former.

Over a course labeled good, Siwa covered the distance in 1:36.17. Trained by Kevin Attard, she earned $75,000 for Knob Hill Stable and the Estate of Steve Stavro.
