Turf Sprint: Tropic Storm out

Tropic Storm was declared out of the Turf Sprint after suffering a tendon injury his left foreleg, trainer Craig Dollase said Monday. Tropic Storm had been pre-entered for both the Sprint on Pro-Ride and the Turf Sprint, but was always pointing for the Turf Sprint.

"He's out indefinitely," Dollase said. "Bad timing. We're very disappointed, but he'll live to fight another day."

Tropic Storm's defection will enable Storm Treasure to run. Storm Treasure, trained by Steve Asmussen, finished fifth, beaten just 1 1/2 lengths by True to Tradition in the Grade 2 Nearctic at Woodbine, his first time sprinting on turf. The Turf Sprint affords Storm Treasure an extra sixteenth of a mile.

"We're not into running longshots, but this horse has a chance to step up and run with the company that he's in with," said Scott Blasi, assistant to Asmussen. "He was coming in the [Nearctic]. There's plenty of pace - we thought we'd take a shot if we got in."

Unlike Curlin, whom Asmussen shipped here a month ago, Storm Treasure arrived in California just on Sunday. After walking Monday, he was to have galloped Tuesday and will blow out Wednesday, Blasi said.
